WORLD BOOK DAY

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.”

Marcus Tullius Cicero

Books act as a window to the outside world which lies beyond one’s tangible reach as author Jhumpa Lahiri says 'That's the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet'' . Reading words on paper stimulate one’s imagination rather than passively watching a visual. There is something  therapeutic about the actual feel of a book, with its scent of printed pages and glossy covers. By the mid-15th century, the printing press revolutionized books to become what they are today and made them readily accessible for everyone. Thanks to this ingenious invention we are able to enjoy the prose and poetry of countless authors and poets — from Shakespeare and Tolstoy to George R.R. Martin. April 23rd was chosen as World Book Day because it coincided with the death anniversary of the bard himself- William Shakespeare along with prominent authors like Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega . However, this date may vary in some countries.

Books are a significant carrier of cultures and time periods around which they are written, even if the author doesn’t intend to make it explicit. From history to science to fiction and fairy tales, each book expands your horizon and perspective. Reading helps to improve vocabulary and fluency. Studies show reading can also help reduce stress by more than 60%.

So grab a classic or a popular fiction bestseller- whatever suits your taste- on your personal ipad, kindle or an actual tangible book (my personal favourite though) and start off onto a new journey. Also, books are perhaps the only treasure that need not be hidden under a bushel. Rather pass them on and share them as much as you can.

Happy Reading!
