Colours Festival of Bollywoodfaces On Holi

Image
It’s the festival of Holi around the corner- a day when colours of all shades fly in the air, leaving behind our given colours of race, class and caste by smearing each other with the colours of festivity and good wishes. Colours have been a significant part of human civilisation and our every day lives. Cinema- which is also a reflection of our lives- has progressed from black and white to colourful visuals, at times employed very meticulously to foreground a deeper meaning in the film. Let us look at some of the films where colours were used as strong motifs and symbols. The Last Colour directed by Vikas Khanna Set in the town of Varanasi, the film depicts the colourless lives of widows of north India. The protagonist, Noor, played by Neena Gupta is forever clad in a white saree, as per the Hindu custom of widowhood. Her colourless attire is symbolic of her abstinence from absolutely any kind of desires, wishes or emotions. The character of Choti promises to smear Noor with colours

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS

Image
Aaj khush toh bahot hoge tum ! When was the last time that the answer to this question was a yes? International day of Happiness marked by United Nations on 20 th March falls in spring- a time when new beginnings in nature and positivity are filled in the air. The immediate question then that rings in mind is ‘ what is happiness?’  Well, the answer to this question is neither definitive nor universal. Its not one for all but is absolutely subjective. What might give happiness to one may cause an opposite reaction on another person as psychologist Aruna Broota along with other researchers point out that every age group has its own meaning of happiness. 21 st century millennials derive their ‘kick’ by activities such as hanging out with friends, partying/clubbing, travelling and most by (sadly though) by the number of likes and followers on social media. We all tend to post only the happy and high moments of our lives on social media sites but what we might forget is that social media

Women empowerment (International Women’s Day)

Image
I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. Maya Angelou  The phrase ‘ women empowerment ’ these days has become obsolete to some due to its over usage and pseudo intellectuals' belief that women empowerment has already been achieved, but has it? Certainly yes if its meaning is confined to sharing social media posts once a year or taking your girlfriend/ wife out on dinner or flashing “sale" signboards to lure women customers. An apparently more rational argument would highlight the various laws and policies made in the name of women's upliftment, but laws on paper do not translate into equality at ground zero. 8th March shall be celebrated as International Women’s day across the globe, with this year’s theme being #ChooseToChallenge – challenging all stereotypes, bias, and discrimination. Women empowerment in its TRUE sense means equal opportunities and equal participation of women in all sectors worldwide along with the ability to make her own decisions witho
