WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 2021

Image
WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY According to India Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS)  Every year, 1 million people in India die due to consumption of tobacco.   The nicotine found in tobacco is highly addictive and creates dependence. The behavioural and emotional ties to tobacco use – like having a cigarette with your coffee,  craving tobacco, feelings of sadness or stress  – make it hard to kick the habit.  With professional support and cessation services, tobacco users double their chances of quitting successfully. Currently, over 70% of the 1.3 billion tobacco users worldwide lack access to the tools they need to quit successfully. This gap in access to cessation services is only further exacerbated in the last year as the health workforce has been mobilized to handle the pandemic. That’s why WHO launched a year-long campaign for World No Tobacco Day’s   – “Commit to Quit” theme. The campaign aims to empower 100 million tobacco users to make a quit attempt by creating networks of support and

BOLLYWOOD TYPES STEREOTYPES

Image
BOLLYWOOD TYPES STEREOTYPES Bollywood or main stream Hindi cinema has forever been thriving and surviving on stereotypes- stereotypes of gender, caste, class, region and religion. The term ‘stereotype’ can be defined as something conforming to a fixed or general pattern especially a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment. Beginning with the overt gender stereotypes, the male lead is the ‘mard jisko dard nahi hota’ , at rescue of the female lead who is always a damsel in distress. A fat girl shall be appointed as this damsel’s “best friend” who is always secondary to the heroine, is comic and never ends up with a guy or a promotion or even a real job in few cases. Be it representing a particular sect or community, Bollywood tends to overdo and extensively generalise. For instance, homosexual male characters or gays are always portrayed as effeminate. Fi

RELEVANCE OF BUDDHIST TEACHINGS IN CONTEMPORARY TIMES

RELEVANCE OF BUDDHIST TEACHINGS INCONTEMPORARY TIMES “A man is not called wise because he talks and talks again; but if he is peaceful, loving and fearless then he is in truth called wise.” – The Dhammapada The upcoming full moon on 26 th May, the moth of Vaisakh according to the Hindu calendar, shall mark the 2583 rd birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha who was born in the – century as prince Sidharth Gautam who later became the greatest spiritual leader and messenger of God mankind ever witnessed. Lord Buddha emphasized four noble truths to mankind. He said that the world is full of suffering. All sufferings have a cause

LUCK V/S HARD WORK

Image
Luck and hard work are apparently two sides of the same coin. The absence of either one becomes justification for the desired or undesired outcome. Hard work can be described as relentless effort towards a set aim. Luck on the other hand is synonymous to terms or ideas such as fortune, destiny or the millennial lingo favourite these days ‘ Karma’ . These terms for centuries have spiralled around the debate whether just like a sculptor an individual carves his or her own life or the fact that each is born with a pre- determined ride called life. A more positive outlook towards life would lay more emphasis on working hard. More often than not, luck or its absence more precisely becomes the scapegoat to brush one’s own culpability under the carpet. At times we tend to do everything right, put our best foot forward but still end up being dejected, blaming it on our luck. This luck can hinder one’s achievements once, twice but not for long. Hard work pays off in its own ways,

EID AL FITR- The festival of breaking of the fast

Image
Their reward at their Lord is the gardens of Eden with flowing streams, wherein they abide forever. GOD is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. Such is the reward for those who reverence their Lord. The Holy Quran Muslims around the world are close to completing the fasting month of Ramadan and are preparing to celebrate with one of Islam’s most important festivals. The end of Ramadan is marked by Eid al-Fitr, also known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast. During Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours, as a means of celebrating and reflecting on their faith. It is one of the five pillars of Islam – the fundamental rules all Muslims follow – along with the Shahadah (declaration of faith), Salat (prayer), Zakat (charity) and the Hajj pilgrimage. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and was originated by the prophet Muhammad. It is one of two global festivals celebrated by Muslims every year, the other being Eid al-Adha, which falls later in the summer

MOTHER’S DAY

Image
Mother’s day is a day to celebrate and honour mothers and motherhood. This day honours the creator of life and her significance in our society. Mothers have been revered across cultures, be it Greek, Christian or Hindu, as nourisher of life. The modern day event of mother’s day was marked by Anna Jarvis in 1908 in United States. What we need to keep in mind is that loving our mothers and respecting motherhood at large need not be limited to a single day. Also, the day is being eclipsed by extensive commercialisation characterised by sales, overprized gifts and fancy dinners. Whereas Mother’s Day is all about showing love, regard and most importantly gratitude for all that our mothers do.  Here are some simple ways to do so during these lockdown times . How about giving your mother a day off from her apparent living room- the kitchen. Cooking a nice meal is one of the sweetest gestures that goes a long way. If you are a first timer like me, cooking videos on Instagram and YouTube wil
