DOES EQUALITY REALLY EXIST IN OUR SOCIETY?

Of course! After all its 21st century! Well, when was the last time you spotted a child working at a dhaba, dismissed a beggar on the street or heard the news of yet another rape in the city? All these are examples of social inequality existing at every day basis in our lives. Equality simply refers to a level playing field for all in terms of equal rights and opportunities. Given India’s complex demographic structure, inequality is deep rooted and is played out through gender, caste, class, race, language and other such cards.

The law forbids untouchability in India, but don’t we separate the utensils of maids working in our luxurious houses till date? An India Today survey conducted in 2019 shows reports of discrimination against Dalits in the village of Mahad , Maharashtra, which is ironically home to Dr B R Ambedkar, the man who himself fought against caste injustice.

Many pseudo intellectuals argue that equality has indeed arrived, citing how women are working in the outside world. What they tend to side-line is the fact that they aren’t accorded senior positions, are paid lesser than their male counterparts, face sexual harassment at the workplace (as well as home). According to Business and Human Rights Resource Centre, more than 72% women experience gender discrimination in India. Caste and class biases become more prominent in situations such as marriages and festivities. Inequality continues to exist in both rural as well as urban spaces, just in different forms.

Reservation on paper doesn’t bring equality in praxis, and this issue is not just limited to India. Blacks all over the globe continue to face racial discrimination, recent instance being African American artist George Floyd’s death in the United States.

Fun Fact: India hosts world’s fifth richest man with approximately 50% of its population in poverty- all at the same time!

It can only be in a utopian world where educational and employment opportunities are the same for the child of an industrialist and that of a rickshaw puller. While in this world on the other hand, the question of the hour is whether Virat Kohli will be able to play cricket after becoming a father, like his wife whose acting career many believe will be ‘over’ after becoming a ‘mother’.
