Water Logging, An Open Invitation To Diseases

For millions of urban Indians, waterlogged roads come along as monsoon package like thunder and lightning. On the other side of the country, Kolkata and Mumbai are in the worst situation.

In 2005 Mumbai floods almost 5,000 people lost their lives but, despite that shock, the city faced water logging again and again. Mumbai monsoon always used to be heavier than in Delhi. But still, just a few hours of rain clog all the roads of Delhi drastically. People have to face a long traffic jam and many diseases emerge in the city due to this.

Who is responsible for so many lives?

Waterlogging brings diseases along. Monsoon showers bring respite from hot weather conditions but also bring along miseries for people marking the onset of seasonal diseases. The risk of infectious diseases increases during monsoons due to the inundation of roads, areas, and localities. According to doctors, waterlogging on roads and lanes are an open invitation of water-borne disease. A number of children, adults lose their lives every year due to these diseases in monsoon. Who will be responsible for so many lives? This is not just a single person's responsibility to take action on this., everyone has to come along for the movement. Else your family can also be the next target of these life-threatening diseases.

What we can do??

The foremost question is: what can we do to make our lives better? While the government authority sorts themselves out, at least we can do our part that is in our control.

Stop throwing garbage, especially plastics, irresponsibly. Adapt the government’s waste disposal system to reduce the blockage in the city’s drainage system: Collect your waste at home and use the municipal garbage pits in the city. Always separate dry, wet and recyclable waste. Every little bit counts; don’t throw those plastic bottles and cans out of the window.

Government should aware people about water logging and its effects

The real change will come only when state governments adopt water logging awareness drive on priority. Firstly, people should be aware of how water logging happens and how can it be controlled by everyone’s effort. Some cities have started doing this, but this is a long-haul project and will involve planning.

People should take this responsibility to keep clean drains regularly and not to through wastes in the drains that clog them.

Adding to man-made problems are natural reasons for this problem getting worse each year. As India’s environmental health worsens, the health of its cities worsens too.
